Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine Calving Interval and Service Period of Sumatran elephants based on births that occurred in Way Kambas National Park from 1988-2021. In this study, there were 64 Sumatran elephants with the ratio of males and females being 3:2. In the birth book, 25 female elephants gave birth to 47 calves at PLG and ERU. Consisting of 13 female elephants who gave birth more than twice and 12 female elephants who gave birth for the first time. At the age of 11-20 years, female elephants give birth for the first time at PLG and ERU. The Calving Interval and Service Period of the Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) extends according to the age of the mother. The Calving Interval of mother elephants in TNWK is the shortest three years at the age of 16-25 years and the longest is 37 years with a Calving Interval of 12 years. The Service Period for mother elephants in TNWK is the shortest one year at the age of 16-28 years and the longest 10 years at the age of 37 years. The causes that make the Calving Interval and Service Period prolong in productive age are influenced by unscheduled mating and the detection of elephant estrus that cannot be seen clearly. Average Calving Interval 5.22 (± 63 months) and Service Period 3.22 (± 39 months) with parent age 16-40 years. If the number of matings of Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is considered to be 3 times, the calving rate of tame elephants in TNWK is 33.33%.
