Abstract

There are much misleading information about Covid-19 and Sinovac vaccine in the middle of 2021. Thus, clarification from the government is required to make people believe in the Sinovac vaccine and to raise people awareness about Covid-19 pandemic. This research is intended to reveal and identify the most frequently used of politeness strategies applied by Retno Marsudi as well as the factor influencing the choices of politeness strategies applied while discussing Covid-19 and Sinovac vaccine issues in a video podcast entitled; Bu MENLU Sampai Nangis Bicara Ini!! Fakta Covid di Lapangan based on Brown and Levinson (1987). Another supporting theory used is Whitton’s theory (2001) to demonstrate the relation between the types of politeness strategies and the code of ethics of the civil service. Qualitative research is the approach applied in the study. The analysis of the data showed that the Marsudi mainlyused positive politeness (64.15%), then followed by off record (16.98%); bald on record (15.09%); and negative politeness (3.77%). Two factors influencing Marsudi’schoice of politeness strategies are awareness of the advantages and circumstances of distance and rank of imposition. It is also found that positive politeness strategy does not breach the civil service code of ethics. Therefore, it can be said that from a government aspect, positive politeness can be modelled by other government civil servants in clarifying Covid-19 and Sinovac vaccine.
