Abstract

Memes are part of fandom’s participatory culture which contains inside jokes and discourses exclusive to the fandom. When exchanged between the fandom members, they become a form of communication that eventually shapes the shared values of the community. This study is aimed to investigate the indexical aspects of memes in ARMY fandom community in Twitter and how they reflect the fandom’s shared values. Ahearn’s (2016) key concepts of anthropolinguistics which include language ideologies, indexicality, and community of practice are used to analyze the data. Based on the 125 viral meme tweets that are found in BTS’ “Butter” and “Permission to Dance” in May 3rd to July 27th 2021 comeback period, there are five categories of meme text physical attributes and seven memes phrasal templates that produce various indexical meanings. The meme typography such as lowercases, uppercases and capitalizations, as well as words and phrases repetitions are the most used creative writing conventions. These creative choices show the tweeters’ way to emphasis and express the intensity of their emotions. Meanwhile, the phrasal template “PAVED THE WAY” that indexes both celebration and confrontation against the outsiders becomes the most prominent presence throughout the comeback period. The ARMY fandom is also found to practice several language ideologies through the inequality in fandom members’ experience and expertise, the multiple language ideologies as shown in their confrontation against non- ARMY fandoms, and their familiarity and inclined preference towards Korean language. All in all, the meme practice in ARMY fandom is able to define the fandom’s shared values and dynamic towards BTS, the fandom members, and the outsiders.
