Abstract

Background: Osteosarcoma is a very rare bone disease, thought to correlate heavily with bone proliferation, it is most commonly described as a disease of childhood. The low awareness of the general public regarding osteosarcoma leads the writer to undergo descriptive research on osteosarcoma to evaluate various variables that are correlated with the disease in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya. The results of this research is not representative of osteosarcoma’s epidemiology in Surabaya or East Java, however. Objective: To report the profile of the osteosarcoma patient that received chemotherapy in the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Division of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital during the period of 2014-2020 Method: Descriptive observational research depicting the profile of osteosarcoma patients given chemotherapy at the orthopaedics and traumatology division in Dr. Soetomo general academic hospital during the period of 2014-2020 Results: 52 patients were found as a result of total sample. Most patients present at Stage IIb (38%) and stage III (35%) amputation is very common (40%), and most patients did not receive at least six cycles of chemotherapy (60%) Conclusion: The results of the research reaffirmed the understanding of osteosarcoma found in pre-existing literature. Important to note however is the results of this research is considerably different to relevant research done in the western world and more developed countries, indicating room for improvement in the healthcare of osteosarcoma patients in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital.
