Abstract

TVC Kemerdekaan 2020 is a television commercial produced by PT Gudang Garam Tbk. This video advertisement served as the object of the study for this research. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The data are the six scenes from the video advertisement. The data was obtained from Gudang Garam youtube channel. The analysis is conducted using Grammar Visual Design by Kress and Van Leeuwen. This research focuses on the analysis of the three metafunctions of Grammar Visual Design which are representational meaning, interactive meaning, and compositional meaning to discover the discourse behind the advertisement. The results of this research show that all three metafunctions can be found on this video advertisement. The video consists of young people working and doing activities at the age around early 20s to late 30s for the majority of them while there are no old people such as in the 50s or older with white hair, elderly skin complexion, etc in the video at all. The narrator’s speech indicated that the narrator wanted to empower the people of Indonesia. The speech combined with the representation of the young workforce in the video created the discourse of empowerming Indonesian youth.
