Abstract

Background: In forensic medicine and medicolegal, sex determination is the first thing that must be known. The mandible is part of the human skeleton, which plays an important role in determining sex. One of the parts of the mandible that has been studied as indicators of sex determination is the gonial angle. The gonial angle can be observed via the media of the lateral cephalogram. Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze differences in gonial angle sizes between males and females through lateral cephalograms and their relationship to gender. Methods: Lateral cephalograms of 70 samples (35 males and 35 females) were measured using ImageJ for gonial angles. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk Test, Levene Test, Independent T-test, and Pearson Correlation Test. Results: The average gonial angle for males is 123.8° ± 10.7° and for females is 123.73° ± 7.2°. Independent T-test showed insignificant results (p = 0.974). Pearson Correlation Test showed no relationship between gonial angle and gender (r = -0.004). Conclusion: There is no significant difference in gonial angle size between male and female, and there is no significant relationship between gonial angle and gender.
