Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of Alpinia galanga extract to the number of Leydig cells and Sertoli cells of male mice (Mus musculus) induced to lead acetate. Twenty-five male mice (Mus musculus) strain Balb/C, 2-3 month, 30 grams were divided into five groups in a completely randomized design with different treatments. Negative control groups C(-) received CMC-Na 1% and positive control groups C(+) received CMC-NA + lead acetate 20mg/Kg BB starting on day 4-24 days. Treatment groups P1, P2, and P3 were given galangal extract for 200mg/Kg BB, 400mg/Kg BB, and 800mg/Kg BB starting on day 1-24 and lead acetate 20mg/Kg BB starting on day 4-24. The highest number of Leydig cells and Sertoli cells was in the negative control groups C(-), the lowest number was in the positive control groups C(+). P3 which given galangal extract for 800 mg/kg BB/day is the most effective to maintain number of Leydig cells (7,760 ± 1,56; p<0,05) and number of Sertoli cells (6,640 ± 0,95; p<0,05), because it was not significantly different from the negative control group C(-) with the mean number of Leydig cells (8.680 ± 1.11; p<0.05) and the mean value of the number of Sertoli cells (7.840 ± 1.34). It can be concluded that giving galangal extract (Alpinia galanga) to male mice (Mus musculus) exposed to lead acetate has been shown can maintain the number of Leydig cells and the number of Sertoli cells.
