Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the language attitudes of FISIP International Relations Department students at Universitas Airlangga toward the use of Indonesian and English as mediums of instruction, as well as to examine the motivations behind their attitudes toward the two languages used as mediums of instruction. The language attitudes of the students were analyzed using Baker's (1992) theory of positive-negative attitude and instrumental-integrative motivation. In this study, a quantitative approach was used, and thirty-five respondents were given questionnaires. The responders were the fourth-year students in International Relations Department. The results revealed that the fourth-year students in International Relations Departments have positive attitudes regarding the use of Indonesian and English as language instruction. Furthermore, their attitudes were influenced by a variety of motifs. Integrative motivation influences positive attitudes about Indonesian, whereas instrumental motivation influences positive attitudes toward English.
