Abstract

In the study of social dialect, variations of language used by people are seen through the aspect of social status. The use of language in accordance to social status can be seen in the tendency of using nonstandard form in the pronunciation which is called phonetic conditioning. This study aims to find out the types and the frequencies of phonetic conditioning in the utterances of participants in the UK reality show Rich House Poor House. The writer used Kroch’s (1978) theory of phonetic conditioning in social dialect variation. The study found that the most common types of phonetic conditioning for both social classes are the change of the [?] sounds into [n] sound and the glottalization of [t] sounds, while the feature of vowel raise from [?] to [?] are common among the poor participants. In terms of frequency, the poor participants of season 5 episode 1 and season 7 episode 4 used more phonetic conditioning in their utterances with the total frequency of 130 and 147 times respectively, while the rich participants of both episodes used phonetic conditioning 105 and 71 times respectively.
