Abstract

Subclinical ketosis (SCK) is one of a most common metabolic disorder in dairy cows during periparturient period. Subclinical ketosis can cause economic losses through decreased milk production. The present study aims at producing an overview about prevalence of subclinical ketosis in periparturient dairy cows through acetoacetate urine examination in KUD “Kertajaya” Kandangan Kediri and risk factors association such as days in milk, parity, and feeding management to subclinical ketosis occurence. Urine samples were collected from 76 dairy cows between 1 – 60 days in milk (DIM) by spontaneous urination or induced by manual stimulation in escutcheon (area below the vulva), vulva, and perineum area. The concentration of acetoacetate in urine was measured using dipstick test that indicated by strip color changing. Classification and Regression Tree (CRT) method was used to analyze the risk factors association (days in milk, parity, and feed management) to subclinical ketosis occurrence. In the urine test, 10 cows (out of 76 cows) were diagnosed with SCK. The overall SCK prevalence in dairy cows between 1 – 60 DIM was 13,2%. The present study found that cows in certain parity (1 and 4) and between 1 – 15 DIM were prone to SCK because it was mostly occurred at this period. Feeding management such as cows feed grouping based on parity and DIM was important to prevent SCK in cows. Cows adequate feed intake can be controlled by feed grouping, so cows avoided from negative energy balance which can lead to SCK occurrence.
