Abstract

Slip of the tongue is one of the primary sources of evidence in explaining speech production process and it is considered as interesting phenomenon in Psycholinguistics for a long time ago. The present study aims to examine the types of slips of the tongue and find out the most frequent type produced by lecturers of Universitas Airlangga in giving lectures using Bahasa Indonesia. The data were collected in three months using qualitative approach in three faculties; Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and Faculty of Humanities. The writer used 13 combined types of slips of the tongue proposed by Fromkin (1973) and Harley (2001). As the result, there were 101 slips of the tongue found. 56 of them belonged to the types of slips of the tongue proposed by Fromkin (1973) and Harley (2001) while 45 slips did not belong to the categorization. From 13 types of slips of the tongue, the writer only found 7 types belong to the combined types of slips of the tongue: (1) phoneme perseveration, (2) phoneme exchange, (3) word exchange, (4) word substitution, (5) haplology, (6) affix deletion, and (7) phoneme deletion. Moreover, word substitution became the most frequent type with a total of 35 slips or about 34.65% of the data. However, the writer also found 5 types beyond the categorization proposed by Fromkin (1973) and Harley (2001): (1) word deletion; (2) syllable insertion; (3) misinfection; (4) phoneme substitution; (5) phoneme insertion. Regarding to the most frequent type, word substitution had a pattern in which it was occurred in the same word class and linguistics unit. In addition, those substituted words were mostly associated by meaning and form.
