Abstract

Defense mechanism has become an interesting issue in psychoanalytic. The aim of this study is to examine the main character, Jemima Hutton, in the novel Please Don’t Stop the Music by Jane Lovering. This study is a qualitative research where the data is taken from the novel, library research, journals, and other resources which are appropriate in conducting the analysis. This study discusses suppression as the defense mechanism done by Jemima. Freudian psychoanalysis theory will be used as the main theory, especially the discussion of psychosexual development, anxiety, and defense mechanism. It is found that Jemima’s personality is associated with her adolescent traumas. They are the death of her parents, brothers, and boyfriend. Those lead to several anxieties in her life, and to overcome the anxieties she does the defense mechanism. Suppression of Jemima is not only the way that she does to overcome her anxieties, but also can be seen as the way how she always ignore the people around that reminds her about her trauma.
