Abstract

Reflexive attention enables rapid, automatic orienting toward salient visual changes. This study examined whether responses were faster on valid than invalid trials and whether the cueing effect was greater at a short cue-target delay. In a within-participants experiment, 343 undergraduate students completed a visual cueing task programmed in PsyToolKit. A 75-ms color change served as a peripheral cue; 75% of trials were valid and 25% were invalid. Cue-target delays were 150 and 575 ms. The cueing effect was calculated as reaction time on invalid trials minus reaction time on valid trials. It was positive at both delays and substantially larger at 150 ms (M = 68.96, SD = 43.02) than at 575 ms (M = 22.27, SD = 41.39), t(342) = -15.43, p < .001, dz = 0.83. These findings show that reflexive orienting is strongest shortly after cue onset and declines as the cue-target interval increases.
