Abstract

This paper examines the stock markets’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Using daily growth of COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths and stock market returns data from BUMN20 stock index over the period April 1st, 2021 to June 31st, 2021 to represent before PPKM period and July 1st,2021 to October 1st, 2021 to represent during PPKM period, we find that stock markets responded negatively to the growth in COVID-19 confirmed cases only on before PPKM period. That is, stock market returns declined as the number of confirmed cases increased. But on the other period, we find that growth in confirmed cases and growth in deaths does not significantly impact stock market returns in the BUMN20 index. Meanwhile, IHSG positively impact stock market returns in the BUMN20 stock index. This research can help investors make investment decisions in this such condition, especially in the company listed in the BUMN20 stock index.
