Abstract

Struggle is a process that must be done by every person to pursue the best thing in life. Mostly, the process to achieve the result is not easy, either it is done by an adult or a child. Thus, it is needed for a child to be nurtured and prepared to face the reality, so he or she will be able to survive in this life and cope with the problems ahead. The struggle of a child to pursue a meaningful life and learn from the experience is the central issue of a novel by Pam Munoz Ryan entitled Esperanza Rising. This study discusses how the formal elements of the text such as plot, characterization, and symbols work together to support the theme of the text and how didacticism is reflected through the formal elements of the text. This study uses New Criticism to examine the issue and the method used is close reading. The writer finds that Esperanza’s struggle to pursue a meaningful life which is portrayed from the formal elements of the text consist of didacticism, that people must live their life with courage, faith, and sincerity to reach their hope. By examining Esperanza’s struggle to establish a meaningful life in the text, the readers will get the moral value which will teach them to live their life better.
