Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to find how the English Department students pronounce English speech sounds. As the English department students, they are expected to have proper pronounciation. Nevertheless, some of them still mispronounce certain English sounds which do not exist in the Indonesian sound system. For this reason, this study aims at the types of phonological errors produced by English Department students of Universitas Airlangga as EFL adult learners. The phonological errors focused on level segmental (vowel and consonant sound). There were two tests given to six respondents. The first test was asking the six respondents to pronounce 77 English borrowing words. This test was intended to find segmental error. Whereas the second test was asking the six respondents to read the links between words. Those two tests were recorded. Besides, the researcher would like to know the causes that make the six respondents mispronounce the words by distributing questionnaires. In brief, the results of this study demonstrate that the respondents fail to identify some English consonants that are supposed to be pronounced /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /ʒ /, /ʧ/, /dʒ/, /l/, /w/, /d/, /p/ and /t/. The problem of vowel sounds was resided such as /i:/, /u:/, /ɔ:/, /ɑ:/, / ɪ/, /ӕ/, /ә/, /ɒ/, /eɪ/, and /oʊ/. The number of the phonological errors made by the six respondents batch 2010 is 63.25% in the form of sound substitution such as avatar, it should be pronounced [ævәtɑ:r] than [ʌfʌtɑ:r]. The biggest problem is the phonological errors when the respondents pronounce vowel sound substitutions in word-medial position
