Abstract

This study attempts to analyze the Spirit of coming back to the nature that is depicted in My Side of the Mountain. This novel was written by Jean Craighthead George in 1976 under Puffin Books Publisher. This novel tells about the boy named Sam who wants to live in the wilderness because it offers the things that cannot be gotten in urban life and he wants to live closely with nature. The main concern of this study is to analyze the depiction of nature that portrays non-urban life and ideology behind the text by using. The importance of this study is to show that wilderness is not as dangerous as people think for young ages. This novel tries to persuade the young readers to love nature and its beauty, as well as nature is not damaged by human. The writer uses qualitative method in analyzing the issue of environment inside the text and using library research in finding data related with environmental issue and nature writing. This study also finds that the natural resources that were available in the wilderness as well as the perspective of people in country life are the positive point of non-urban area that can raise the spirit of coming back to the nature to Sam as main character. Thus, this novel offers some guidance to the reader about surviving skills that are needed to live in the wilderness. The analysis concludes that the ideology constructed in the text is pastoral which rejects urban life as polluted and corrupted life and supports country life as harmonic form of life.
