Abstract

Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19) caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) with symptoms of cough, shortness of breath, and fever. Patients with shortness of breath are at risk for life-threatening secondary bacterial infections. Antibiotic uses has been proven to give good results and cause resistance when used incorrectly. Research is needed that observes the suitability of the use of antibiotics to be used as an evaluation material for improving the quality of life. This study identified the type, dose, route, duration, potential side effects and inappropriate use of antibiotics using the analytical cross-sectional retrospective method from patient medical record for the period September 2020 - September 2021 at Dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya. The research obtained a research ethics permit from the Health Research Ethics Committee of Dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya with the number 1404/103/4/IV/2022. This study observed 150 patient medical records, then adjusted the research sample criteria and obtained 53 medical records. Results of this study were 80 antibiotic uses from 53 patients with details, 54/80 (67.50%) empirical antibiotic uses and 26/80 (32,50%) definitive antibiotic uses. The most common route is intravenous, which was 48/80 (60,00%) uses. Results of the analysis showed that type, dose, route of antibiotics were appropriate. Results of the analysis of the length antibiotic uses obtained 27/28 (96,43%) uses that is in accordance with 1/28 (3,57%) uses that is not suitable.
