Abstract

p-Methoxycinnamic Acid (pMCA) is an isolated substance from Kaempferia galanga Linn. rhizome with analgesic and anti inflammatory activity. pMCA has a poor solubility in water, therefore it was formed as an inclusion complex with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin. The ability of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin to form an inclusion complex with a guest molecule is a function of two factors. The first is steric and depends on the relative size of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin cavity to the size of the guest molecule. The second is the thermodynamic interaction between the different components of the system. In this study, complex formation of pMCA and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin in the acetate buffer 0.02 M pH 4.0 and phosphate buffer 0.02 M pH 7.0 all with μ =0.2 and at temperatures of 32o, 37o, and 42o ± 0.5.oC were determined. The result showed that pMCA formed inclusion complex with hidroxypropyl-β- cyclodextrin and solubility of pMCA increased by the increasing of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin concentration. The increasing of temperature made the complex stability constantly decreased. The interaction shown a negative enthalphy (ΔH < 0 ) and a spontaneous processes (ΔG < 0). In pH 4,0 occur an increase in the entropy of the system (ΔS > 0), but in pH 7,0 the entropy of the system decrease ((ΔS <0)
