Abstract

Suji (Dracaena angustifolia) is one of medicinal plants that grows in Indonesia. It is traditionally used to treat beriberi and gonorrhoea. In development of natural product, standardization is required that ensures the efficacy and safety of the raw materials. In this study the specific and non-specific parameters are determined based on Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia. The raw materials are from Batu and Kebumen region. Suji leaf has a single leaf shape, lanceolate, tapered and embrace stem. Leaf surface is slippery and flat. The edges of leaf is flat. It has parallel leaf bone. The length of leaf is 20 - 30 cm and the width is 2 - 4 cm. Organoleptically the leaf is dark green, odorless and no taste. Suji leaf has upper epidermal fragments, lower epidermis with parasitic type stomata, mesophyll, sclerenchyme fibers and vessels with spiral thickening. The results of specific parameters showed 13.55 ± 0.29% and 11.52 ± 0.29% of ethanol soluble extractive; 29.25 ± 0.24% and 22.69 ± 0.26% of water soluble extractive; 0.47 ± 0.03% and 0.25 ± 0.01% of total sterol content calculated as β-sitosterol from Batu and Kebumen region, respectively. The results of non-specific parameters showed 7.74 ± 0.02% and 9.73 ± 0.47% of total ash content; 0.66 ± 0.16% and 1.21 ± 0.19% of acid insoluble ash content; 10.43 ± 0.41% and 10.03 ± 0.25% of loss on drying; 8.33 ± 0.58% and 6.33 ± 0.58% of water content from Batu and Kebumen region, respectively
