Abstract

Swear words are used by some people to express their anger or frustration. Swear words give the foul effect for people who hear someone swearing. However, swear words are still showed to public. The purposes of this research are describing types of swear words and identifying the most frequently used types of swear words. In the reality, swear words can be showed by scene of the movie that we watch. Many people assume that swear words are nasty words to be said by each other. Using qualitative approach, the writer attempts to see how the actors and actress use the swear words in The Expendables 3 movie. In this research, the writer uses the script of movie to identify swear words. Swear words are classified based on Jay’s theory of the types of swear words. The result shows that out of ten types of swear words proposed by Jay, nine types occur. The researcher found many kinds of swear words by watching this movie. Type of taboo was not found in this movie. Several kinds of swear words can be cross categorized. It depends on the context to classify swear words.
