Abstract

Transferring idioms on the movie in a form of subtitle may be one of the subtitler’s challenges to produce a good movie translation. This qualitative study investigates the types of the idioms, the translation strategies using Baker’s translation strategy for idioms and the equivalence of the translation using Pym’s equivalence theory. The data obtained from the Indonesian subtitles of Christopher Robin movie on Disney+ Hotsar platform as the target text, and the transcribed English spoken utterances as the source text. The study discovered 44 idioms in the movie selected and four types of idioms identified. Transparent idioms appear 12 times or 27% of the whole data, semi transparent 11 times or 25%, semi opaque five times or 11% and opaque 16 times or 37%. Further, there are five strategies employed in translating the idioms and the most frequent strategy is translation by paraphrase that is used 28 times or 69% of the total strategies. Moreover, most of the equivalence shows directional equivalence which equals 73% of the total translation. The equivalence of the translation occurs mostly on the reference level in which the translator tried to preserve the meaning of the idioms. Hence, the result of this study presents that the translation of idioms in this movie is considered a good translation since the message of the movie could be delivered to the intended audience.
