Abstract

This thesis focuses on the main female character in William Irish’s Waltz into Darkness, Bonnie Castle. It determines to find out the corelation between Bonnie Castle’s childhood and adolescent period with the anxiety disorder that she suffers from in her young adulthood period. In order to prove the corelation, first, this thesis wants to figure out how the anxiety disorder leads to identity confusion. And how this confusion shapes Bonni’s personality traits. Second, it also wants to figure out how the anxiety disorder teaming up with identity difusion, cause Bonnie to take wrong decisions that lead her to destructive actions. In analyzing the novel, the writer applies psychoanalysis theory, especially the comprehensive concept of human’s stages of psychological development which is proposed by Erik Erikson as the fundamental theory. Freudian psychoanalysis is also used as the supporting theory since Erikson’s theory is actually the extension of Freudian’s psychoanalysis. This thesis applies qualitative method which means that most of the data used in this study is taken from the novel itself, journals, magazines ad any other resources which are suitable in conducting the analysis. In the end, this study discovers that the anxiety disorder and identity confusion experienced by Bonnie is actually the result of her unpleasant and traumatic childhood and adolescent experiences.
