Abstract
Effort becomes the most important part of human life. Without effort, people cannot reach what they want, especially if the people want to reach a better life. There are so many efforts that people can do to reach a better life. The people can move to another country and rebuild their life in that new country. One of the novels which portrays about making some efforts to reach a better life is We Need New Names written by NoViolet Bulawayo. This novel portrays the major character named Darling who lives in Zimbabwe, having a dream moving to America because of the unproper socio-economic condition in her hometown to reach a better life. She makes some efforts to reach those two things. To analyze the novel, the writer uses New Criticism as the theory to find the theme of the novel as the aim of this study. The results of the analysis shows that Darling should make efforts to survive in Paradise, Zimbabwe, with all of the limitations, to face the truth about America and to deal with the irony between her dream and reality. It is shown that the best and suitable theme for this study is that “raining stones in our country is better than raining stones in other country”.
