Abstract

Mates, Dates, and Sequin Smiles is a novel about Nesta Williams, 15 year-old girl living in London. Having the Italian and Jamaican blood from her parents, she considers herself beautiful and adorable. She also thinks that her outer appearance is her most valuable asset, more than her academic achievement or other qualities as well. She feels very confident about herself as long as she has good appearance. The conflict begins when she has to wear braces. It inflicts her inferiority because Nesta realizes that she has lost her best quality. Nesta's belief about her appearance is the focus of this research. It discusses the reason that eventually makes Nesta believes that she should be beautiful and perfect in order to gain her self-confidence. In analyzing this problem, the hyperreality theory by Jean Pierre Baudrillard is applied. This theory concerns about the impact of mass communication toward society. It is a theory of three stages; simulation, simulacrum, and hyperreality. The theory is used because Nesta gets some ideals from media like television, magazines, and movies in shaping this opinion. The output of this research is that the media like movies have simulated the concept of beauty and created simulacrum. Finally, the simulated concept of beauty becomes hyperreality for Nesta in regarding appearance. Her self-confidence is built up on the basis of having good appearance. She also believes that her social status and existence in society are determined by having good outlook.
