Abstract
The importance of women agency is under discussion at many forums. Especially their agency in religious sphere in Muslims is much debated. The study in hand is about agency of Woman Sufi adherents in modern Sufi network and their relations in Punjab-Pakistan. It highlighted the contributions of woman Sufi adherent as active agent in MUSLIM institute. It also studied how MUSLIM institute is spreading message of Sufism in contemporary era. Three theories are used for current research. The first is “The network society” of Manuel Castells that evaluates the impacts of use of modern mode of communication in globalized world by modern Sufi networks. Second theory is, Anthony Giddens’ (1984) “Structuration theory of Transformation” which investigated type of innovative practice were performed by women as agency for negotiating their space and transforming MUSLIM institute. Third theory is "Social Capital Theory" by Robert Putnam (2000) to study relations between woman Sufi adherents and MUSLIM institute. The study opted qualitative methodology for in-depth analysis. It was executed by using methods of in-depth interviews, documents review, focus group discussions and observation analysis for collecting research data. Semi structured interview guide was used as research instrument for In�depth interviews. The target populations were spiritual leader, woman Sufi adherents and staff of MUSLIM Institute, an organization of modern Sufi network of Hadrat Sultan Bahoo (RE). After collecting research data, it was analyzed through narrative analysis. In this research it was found that woman Sufi adherents are contributing to MUSLIM institute through their intellectual contributions. They are transforming modern Sufi network with their role as active agent in MUSLIM institute and in society. It was also found that despite of their active role they are not entitled to attain the position of spiritual master in this order. The research finding will help the readers and other researchers to understand the phenomenon of modern Sufi networks and its relation with woman Sufi adherents globally especially in the Muslim world. The research found that MUSLIM institute is enlightening and educating woman Sufi adherents to empower them and that strengthen their agency and social capital. Because of digital communication technologies women Sufi adherent are accessing Sufi message more. Modern communication technology is helping voluntary networks to work more efficiently.
