Abstract

Background: The habit of consuming rice that have low levels of fiber, resistant starch (RS) and amylose amylopectin ratio affect the success of diabetes mellitus (DM) therapy, so that analog rice need to be developed. Purpose: The aim of this study was to prove the effect of analog rice on GLP-1, insulin and adiponectin serum levels, the expression of GLUT-2 in pancreatic β- cells and fasting blood glucose (FBG) level of type 2 DM rats compared to those given rice. Methods: Fifty male Wistar rats divided into the control group (K) (n=10) and the treatment group. The K, was given standard feed for three weeks. The treatment group were induced by administration the High-Fat Diet and injected with streptozotocin once, at the end of the second week at a dose of 35 mg/kgbwt, than In the third week were divided into 4 groups, SG, RG, AR1 and AR2 groups each were fed standard diet, Rice, analog rice 1 (AR1) and analog rice 2 (AR2) for 6 weeks. At the end of the sixth week the parameters were measured. Results: The GLP-1 serum level of the K was 46.1±4.3 ng/ml. The GLP-1 serum levels of SG and RG were not significantly different from K, while The AR1 and AR2 groups a significant increased. All the treatment groups had lower insulin and adiponectin levels than K, but there were not significant differences for AR1. RG had the lowest insulin and adiponectin levels. There was not significant differ to the expression of GLUT-2 in pancreatic β-cell for all of the groups. Administration of analog rice results in a significant decrease in the fasting blood glucose level when compared with K and RG. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is there are significant difference on the GLP-1, insulin, adiponectin serum and blood glucose levels but there is not significant differences on the expression of GLUT-2 in pancreas among DM rats given an analog rice diet compare to those given rice.
