Abstract

Background. Acrylic resin has been used since 1937 as dental prosthesis, it is manipulated using wet polymerization by boiling it in hot water for certain amount of time and temperature, this method is also known as conventional method. Microwave heating of the acrylic base is another alternative, the advantages this procedure gives are shorter amount of manipulation time with the same quality or even better and cleaner procedure, because it does not use water. The microwave heating uses electromagnetic wave that can vibrate the molecule, which creates heat, this method is considered to be more efficient compared to the conventional method. Purpose. To measure the shear bond strength difference of acrylic tooth and base using microwave and conventional method Material and Method. sixteen samples of acrylic base are polymerized with acrylic tooth and then divided into two groups. The first eight to the first group which was polymerized with conventional method and the next eight are polymerized with microwave method. Result. There is no significant difference between both group, p=0,098 (p<0,05). The shear bond strength of microwave method is 57,076 MPa and the shear bond strength of the conventional method is 63,527 MPa Conslusion. The microwave method creates weaker shear bond strength of acrylic tooth and acrylic base.
