Abstract

Background: Pain is one of the symptoms of acute inflammation normally occured after odontectomy. Pain is usually perceived differently among individuals as it is very subjective. Many patients refuse to have odontectomy because of the fear of pain after the surgery, although there was no data indicating that it was case. In the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Airlangga University there has been no study regarding the pain after odontectomy. Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine the degree of pain by the patients after odontectomy. Method: This descriptive observational study is conducted with questionnaire, based on Behavior Rating Scale (BRS), filled up by the patient one day after odontectomy in Oral maxillofacial Surgery clinic, Dental Hospital, Arilangga University. The data was collected within the period of September and December 2011. The data included degree of pain based on BRS, classification of lower third molar, the duration of odontectomy, and other complaints associated with post odontectomy condition. Result: Out of 50 patients involved in this study, 22 (44%) patients did not experience pain, 16 (32%) patients experienced very mild pain, 4 (8%) patients experienced pain but not stronger than that the patient can forget, 7 (14%) patients with pain but can perform normal activities, 1 (2%) patient had strong pain, and no patient experienced very strong pain and totally handicapped. Conclusion: Majority of the patient undergoing odontectomy did not suffer pain that can disturb their normal activities.
