Abstract

There is significant increasing number of bacteria Streptococcus mutans after placement fixed orthodontic, so the using of O-ring ligation must be avoided from patient with poor oral hygiene, because O-Ring ligation would increase plaque accumulation. The preventive of plaque accumulation is by using toothbrush. Purpose. To find out that there are differences of using orthodontic toothbrush and orthodontic toothbrush combination interdental toothbrush in reducing the number of Streptococcus mutans’s colonies in fixed orthodontic patient. Method. 14 subjects of 18-25 years old dental students of Airlangga University who have been using fixed orthodontic appliances divided into 2 groups. First group, brushing the teeth with orthodontic toothbrush during 2 minutes. Second group, brushing the teeth with orthodontic toothbrush during 2 minutes combination interdental toothbrush during 2 minutes. Before brushing, O-ring at tooth of 22 was removed. After brushing, O-ring at tooth of 12 was removed, then both of O-rings incubated and bred to see the number of colonies of Streptococcus mutans. Result: The result showed that the comparison of colonies Streptococcus mutans between orthodontic toothbrush and orthodontic toothbrush combination interdental toothbrush was significantly different (p value = 0.000; p < α 0.05). Conclusion. There is difference of orthodontic toothbrush and orthodontic toothbrush combination interdental toothbrush using, which orthodontic toothbrush combination interdental toothbrush have more ability to reducing number of colonies of Streptococcus mutans than using orthodontic toothbrush without combination.
