Abstract

Composite is a material that is often used by dentists. The process of the composite on dentin is complex due to the nature of the hydrophobic composite cannot be attached to a hydrophilic dentin, therefore needed an intermediary bonding for composite on dentin. However HEMAbonding on dentin is influenced by smear layer and the hydroxiapatite which may reduce the infiltration of bonding on dentin. To remove the smear layer can be done a total etch technique that remove all the smear layer or a self etch technique which modifies the smear layer.Purpose: The purpose of this laboratory research is to compare total etch and self etch technique. Method: 21 samples of bovine teeth were divided into 3 group. Each group consisted of seven samples. Group A was treated with total etch technique group B was treated with self etch technique and group C without the application etch. Result: The average shear bond strength in group A is 6.93 MPa, whereas that group B is 4.74MPa, group C is 1.71 MPa Conclusion: shear bond strength of the composite bonding on dentin with total etch technique higher than shear bond strength of the composite bonding on dentin with total etch technique.
