Abstract

Panoramic radiographs was one of radiography imaging which had been used in dentistry to examine upper and lower jaw in a single film. Panoramic radiograph can be used to measure mandibular cortical width. Mandibular cortical was lower border of the mandible which have compact structure. According to li terature, sex and race can influence mandibular cortical width. No information on value of mandibular cortical width in Javanese male and female has been found in literature. Purpose: The study was purposed to knows the difference of the mandibular cortica l width of Javanese male and female. Method: Panoramic radiographs of thirty Javanese patients (15 males and 15 females aged 20-30 years) randomly chosen from Parahita Diagnostic Center were evaluated. The mandibular cortical width was measured with calip er to an accuracy of 0.05 mm. Measurements were made by three observers. The obtained results were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The mean of the mandibular cortical width was 4.96 mm in males and 4.33 mm in females. This study showed there w as significant difference of the mandibular cortical width (p<0.05) between Javanese male and female Conclusion: The mandibular cortical width of Javanese male greater than Javanese female.
