Abstract

Background. Patient using removable orthodontic could increase the prevalence of Candida Albicans and stomatitis in mouth. Candida Albicans have been implicated in many fungal diseases such as candidiasis or thrush. Piper Betle L. in the phytochemistry screening are contains flavonoids and alkaloids which both have an antimicrobial agent. Punica Granatum contains of kavikol and karvakrol which both have an antimikrobial agent too. Purpose. The aim study was to know the effect of using piper betle n punica granatum combination infusion to decrease of Candida Albicans colonization in patient using removable orthodontic appliance. Method. This research was using 7 swab sample from patient with removable orthodontic appliance for six month, between ages 8-12 years. The study was antimicrobial test of serial dilution with concentration of 250 mg/ml, 125 mg/ml, 62,5 mg/ml, 31,2 mg/ml, 15,6 mg/ml, 7,8 mg/ml and difusion method. Then Candida Albicans colonization on each sampels were counted. Results. There were significant differences (p< 0,05) of the quantity of Candida Albicans’s colonies in patients using removable orthodontic appliance after being piper betle infusion 62,5 mg/ml, punica granatum infusion 125 mg/ml, combination infusion of piper betle an punica granatum 250 mg/ml. Conclusion. Piper betle infusion 62,5 mg/ml is more effective than Punica granatum infusion 125 mg/ml and combination infusion of Piper betle and Punica granatum 250 mg/ml : 250 mg/ml
