Abstract

Background The purpose of this study was to found the accuracy of caries risk score with saliva-check buffer test (stimulated saliva pH) and saliva-check S. mutans test on the caries index. Method Sample consisted of 38 children from student TK Al-Muttaqien Surabaya with the range of aged 3-5 years old. The teeth of the children checked based on the WHO criteria then give the score for it to see the caries index. The author instructed the patient to chew the gum to stimulate their saliva then collected it in the collection cup. Saliva was put into the mixing container, then the reagen was added. Saliva that already changed into green color was dropped into a saliva-check S. mutans test with time accumulation approximately 15 minutes for knowing the result. then give the score for it. pH strip of saliva-check buffer test was placed into collection cup for 10 second and then the color alteration in pH strip could be observed. The result was compared with the testing chart. Result There was significant difference between index caries and saliva-check S. mutans, the significance of P-value : 0,039 ≤ α (0.05). But, measurement of index caries and saliva-check buffer show different result, there was no significant difference, the significance of P-value : 0,0401 ≥ α (0.05). Conclusion Caries risk score with saliva-check buffer test (stimulated saliva pH) show more accurate than saliva-check S. mutans test in TK Al-Muttaqien Surabaya.
