Abstract

Background. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. According to WHO, cancer incidence is increasing every year and in Indonesia the incidence of cancer is high. Cytotoxic chemotherapy, the main choice for cancer therapy, can interfere with oral health. One of its effect is oral mucositis, an inflammation and ulceration of the oral mucosa. Purpose. Purpose of this study is to find out the prevalence of oral mucositis in cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy in Dr. Soetomo Surabaya General Hospital. Methods. Descriptive observational research with time series design and total sampling method the samples consisted of 69 cancer patients treated in IRNA Chemotherapy Dr. Soetomo General Hospital from September to October 2015. Results. Out of 69 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy subyects, 47 suffered oral mucositis in at least once during the period of chemotherapy cycles. Conclusion. The prevalence of oral mucositis in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital is 68% (47 cases). Anti metabolite is a type of chemotherapy drugs that most often causes oral mucositis.
