Abstract
Background. Dental and oral health education is one way to prevent oral health problems, with the achievement level that better dental health. Children with special needs should be given oral health education using educational media that can adjust the development of cognitive, affective and psychomotor these children. Dolls is regarded as unique and funny media in the delivery of materials on dental health in children. In addition, the doll was designed attractive and pay attention to the psychological aspects of children with special needs. So, children become more interested in participating in the following dental and oral health education. Purpose. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of oral health education through the medium of cartoon dolls on mentally disabled children aged 10-13 years. Method. This research is a quasi experimental with pre and post test design carried out in the School Bangun Bangsa Surabaya with 20 mentally disabled children aged 10-13 years who were divided into two treatment groups are media group counseling with dolls and without doll. Both groups examined the cleanliness of teeth with a score Personal Hygiene Performance (PHP) before and after brushing teeth. Results. Data analysis was performed with paired samples test and independent test samples obtained p = .000 (p <0.05), which indicates there is a difference between the difference in plaque scores after counseling with and without a puppet doll. Conclusion. Giving knowledge of how to brush teeth through the media puppets on mentally disabled children can reduce plaque score because using dolls media mentally disabled children more easily understand how to brush teeth properly so as to improve oral hygiene.
