Abstract

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) still became a problem in developed countries and developing countries. Neonatal deaths caused by LBW reached 38.03% and this figure was the highest compared to the other causes. The occurrence of LBW was associated with gingivitis in pregnant women. Recently, the prevalence of gingivitis in pregnant women was quite high. The result of the preliminary study held on Puskesmas Jagir showed that all pregnant women suffered from gingivitis. This indicates that there was lack of awareness and knowledge of pregnant women about the occurrence of gingivitis during pregnancy. Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the knowledge of pregnant women about the occurrence of gingivitis during pregnancy in Puskesmas Jagir. Method: This study was a descriptive observational. The samples were selected by total sampling. There were 70 samples of pregnant women in this research. The research instruments used in this study were an interview guideline that contained questions that measured women’s knowledge about gingivitis and an observational sheet used for recording OHI-S and GI index. Result: The results of this study showed that 45.7% of pregnant women knew about clinical symptoms of gingivitis, 7.1% knew about the causes of gingivitis, and none of them knew about the effects of gingivitis in pregnant women and the fetus. Conclusion: Most of the pregnant women knew about the clinical symptoms of gingivitis, but only few of them knew about the cause of gingivitis and no one knew about the effect of gingivitis.
