Abstract

BACKGROUND: Candida albicans (C. albicans) is a dimorphic fungus which is pathogenic pportunistic and normal flora in oral cavity. Presence of the C.albicans results in oral candidosis and is one of the most high complication incidence rates in the oral cavity of about 90% in patients with immunocompromized condition such as HIV / AIDS. With the more expensive price of drugs and a number of side effects, the use of herbal ingredients is highly recommended. Therefore, researcher used ethanol extract of papaya leaves (Carica papaya Linn.) to test whether papaya leaves can be used as an antifungal,especially in preventing the growth of C.albicans. Papaya leaves are believed to have many medical properties. PURPOSE: To find the minimum inhibitory concentration of ethanolic extract of papaya leaves on the prevention of Candida albicans growth. METHOD: This experiment was done by using dilution method. The extract was diluted into 8 different concentrations (100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%,6.25%, 3.12%, 1.56%, 0.78%). Then crosscheck was done by counting the colonies of Candida albicans in the Sabouraud Dextrose Agar plate. The result was recorded and analyzed by using One Way ANOVA. RESULT: The result showed that antifungal activity was active at concentration 50% as minimum inhibitory concentration with average total colony is about 12 colonies. Statistical test showed that there were significant differences of total colony from each concentration. CONCLUSION: Papaya leaf extract could prevent the growth of Candida albicans at concentration 50%.
