Abstract

Background. Dental extraction is the removal of teeth from the socket. Bleeding occurs to initiate healing process following the removal of a tooth. Three phase of healing process; imflammatory, proliverative, and remodelling. Healing process was influenced by local factors and common factors. Local factors such as blood supply, foreign bodies, infection, wound size, and mechanical factors. Common factors such us age, nutrition, vitamin, hormone, circulation status, and smoking. Smoking caused many harmful components that will enter into smoker’s body, i.e, nicotine, acrolein and aldehyde. Purpose. To knows smoking effect on wound healing after dental extraction. Method. This study was studied time of wound healing after dental extraction in smoker and non-smoker group. Clinical examination was performed on the first and seventh days after dental extraction using Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool scale. Result. Significant different was found on the score of healing between groups (p=0,029). Smoker group had a prolong granulation tissue formation after dental extraction. Conclusion. The harmful component of smoking can interfere healing process after dental extraction.
