Abstract
Background. Many people have problems with halitosis. This condition
occurs due to the metabolism of bacteria inside the oral cavity that produce
sulphur gases. The number of bacteria in the oral cavity is affected by the flow of
saliva. Saliva has antibacterial substances that suppress the bacterial growth. The
lack of mastication process during fasting is one of the causes of the lack of saliva
secretion, but by moving the tongue and the muscles for pronunciation can
stimulate more saliva flow. Purpose. The aim of this study is to compare the levels
of H2S gas before and after the pronunciation of the Hijaiyah and that of Latin
letters. Method. This experimental analytical study used 16 subjects with pre-set
criteria. Each subject participated in two experiments for two days, Hijaiyah on
the first day and Latin on the second. H2S gas was measured by using Oral
Chroma. The result of the data analysis using independent T-test showed p value
0,641>0,05. Result. There is no significant difference in the amount of H2S in the
oral cavity between the pronunciation of the Hijaiyah and that of Latin letters.
