Abstract

Background. The mouth is an obvious portal of entry to the body, and oral health reflects and influences general health and well being. The findings suggest that incorporating periodontal care may result in improved pregnancy outcomes. Pregnant women with periodontal diseases may be at increased risk for having preterm birth and low birth weight. That is why extent of mother knowledge regarding oral health during pregnancy is very important. Appropriate dental care and prevention during pregnancy may reduce poor prenatal outcomes. Purpose. The aim of this research is to knowing the prevalence rate of preterm birth and low birth weight in pregnant women with periodontal diseases in Lombok Dua Dua Maternity Hospital during April-September 2010 period. Method. This research was conducted on subjects pregnant women with periodontal diseases who gave preterm birth and low birth weight babies. To collect the data, subjects answered some questions. This research was conducted over six months. Result. Based on the data, the presentation for pregnant women with periodontal diseases who gave preterm birth is 5,6% to 14 % and low birth weight babies is 6,7% to 9%. Conclusion. The presentation of pregnant women with periodontal diseases who gave preterm birth and low birth weight babies are less than normal birth.
