Abstract

Background. Cola is known as a popular softdrink with sour taste. Based on glass ionomer cement characteristic which has high solubility in acid solution, it is possible that the consumption of cola will affect the surface roughness of conventional glass ionomer cement. Adding Hidroxy Ethyl Methacrylate (HEMA) into resin modified glass ionomer cement is predicted to make that material stroger when soaked into cola compared with the glass ionomer cement. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to know the surface roughness properties of glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement after being soaked in cola. Method. This research using post test only control group design. Glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement sample have the shape of cube with dimensions of length 10 mm, width 4 mm, dan height 2,5 mm, soaked in cola for 3 minutes and 18 hours. As a control, samples are soaked in aquadest for 3 minutes. The data from each glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement were analyzed statistically using oneway Anova, followed by Tukey HSD test with significance level of 5%. To compare between glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement, Independet T-Test and CI analysis is used. Results. All groups presented rougher surfaces after immersion for both glass ionomer cement or resin modified glass ionomer cement. Glass ionomer cements show a significant difference on the average value of surface roughness between groups which was soaked in aquadest for 3 minutes compared in cola for 18 hours, also between group which was soaked in cola for 3 minutes compared in cola for 18 hours. Resin modified glass ionomer cement show a significant difference on the average value of surface roughness between groups which was soaked in aquadest for 3 minutes compared in cola for 18 hours. All groups of glass ionomer cement are compared with resin modified glass ionomer cement, there is a significant difference on the average value of surface roughness between groups which was soaked in cola for 18 hours. Conclusion. Soaking the glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement into cola can cause the surface roughness to be rougher than soaking in aquadest. Longer for immersion in both cola or aquades causes greater surface roughness. Soaking the glass ionomer cement into cola and aquadest will cause the surface roughness higher compared to resin modified glass ionomer cement.
