Abstract
Background Autism (also known as “autistic disorder” and “classic autism” is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which social interaction, language, behavior and cognitive function are impaired severely. The uniqueness of the phenomenon of autism is a thing that is interesting and challenging to do research and study, especially those related to oral health problems. Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare saliva pH level in autistic individuals, comparing the result with a control group. Material and Methode The study was performed on 30 autistic children, ages 6-12. The control group was composed of 30 healthy children, randomly selected, and also ages 6-12. Whole saliva was collected in the measuring cup, and pH levels were determined using a digital pH meter (Hanna instruments HI 96107). Data were plotted and submitted to parametric (independent t test) statistical test with significance level less than 0,05. Results When comparing pH level autistic group with control group there was significant statistical difference (p = 0,000). Conclusion Data suggest that autistic individuals have a lower pH level than control group, although still within the normal pH range.
