Abstract

Background. Tea is a kind of universal beverage that consumed by a lot of people. There are many kind of tea, such as black tea and white tea. Both white tea and black tea contain polyphenols, but it differs in their composition because of the fermentation process in black tea. Polyphenols are known to have antibacterial effects. Streptococcus mutans is one of normal microflora that can be found in oral cavity. This study uses black and white tea with concentration 0,1% because in the previous study has been proved that on concentration 0,1% of black tea extract could inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, but, the study about the antibacterial effect of white tea on Streptococcus mutans has not been conducted yet. Purpose. To find the effectiveness of black tea extract concentration of 0.1% compared with white tea extract concentration of 0.1% against Streptococcus mutans. Method. This is an experimental laboratories study. Black tea and white tea extract was made with maceration method, then continued with counting the inhibition zone that formed. Results. Extracts of white tea has a diameter of inhibition zone larger than the black tea extract. Conclusion. Extracts of white tea with concentration of 0,1% is more effective than black tea extract concentration of 0.1%.
