Abstract

Tongue as the sense of taste have taste buds which covers the entire surface. Taste buds contain taste receptors which are sour, salty, sweet, bitter, and umami. Sour taste is important for some people beause it is useful to feel the taste the food. In children with dental caries there are decrease of salivary pH and an increase concentration of H+ ions as the sense of taste sour. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine changes of sour taste sensory sensitivity between children with caries and free caries. Method: This study was designed by analytical research conducted cross sectional approach. This study was conducted on subjects aged 9 to 10 years. The subjects are 16 children with caries and 16 sample of free caries children. The sense of taste sensitivity studies using citric acid with a variety of spesific concentration. This study was conducted over 2 weeks on September 2014 in Mojo VI and Mojo VII elementary school. Result:. There was significant differences towards sensitivity of sour taste sense (p < 0.05) in children with caries cause a decline in the capacity of a buffer which causes an increase of H+ ions so that the atmosphere of the oral cavity become acidic. Conclusion: There are differences in sour taste sensory sensitivity between children with caries and free caries, where free caries children have a sour taste sense which is more sensitive than high caries children.
