Abstract

Background: Dental arch was suggested as a major element for diagnosing and therapy in dental medicine. The size of dental arch was different based on gender. In previous research, there was no significant difference between men and women, although the women had smaller dental arch size than men. However, the environment and population was related to dental arch growth. A difference population would show a difference craniofacial shape. Based on the background it was to do an observation to observe whether there was a difference between men and women mandibular dental arch in Javanese population. Purpose: The aim of this study was to know the difference between men and women mandibular dental arch and the shape of mandibular dental arch in Javanese population. Method: This study was conducted on sixty student samples that were thirty men and thirty women from Faculty of Dentistry Airlangga University. The measurement was performed with model study in the direction of transversal and sagittal using caliper instrument. Result: This study proved that there was a significant different between men and women mandibular dental arch. The L66, L77, and L71 were the most significant different. Meanwhile, the mandibular shape that mainly in men was mid (46,67%), wide (26,67%), narrow (16,67%), pointed (6,67%), flat (3,33%) and women was narrow (63,33%), mid (23,33%), pointed (6,67%), flat (6,67%), wide (0%). Conclusion: This study shown that there was a significant difference between men and women mandibular dental arch in Javanese population.
