Abstract

Background. Leeway space is the space that arises from difference sum of mesiodistal width of primary canine and molars with permanent canines and premolars in the transitional period. The role of Leeway space in this period is important because it can be used to solve the lack of space problem. There are some major prediction about Leeway space value which is generally gained from Caucasian and this is not suitable for Indonesian, especially for Deutro-Malay. Sitepu found a formula to predict the mesio distal width of permanent canines, first premolars and second premolars based on the total mesiodistal width of lower incisors. Sitepu formula is very suitable for Deutero-Malay because his research using sample from Deutero-Malay. Purpose. The aim of this study is to determine the value of Leeway space in Orthodontic patients at RSGMP FKG Unair. Method. This study was done on 61 pairs of study models which were taken from selective randome sampling. The study was done by measuring the mesiodistal mandibular permanent incisors and measuring the amount of mesiodistal width of primary canine, first molar and second molar in Study models and then mesiodistal width of permanent canines, first premolars and second premolar that has not been eruption predicted by using the Sitepu formula. Result.Measurements of the mesiodistal width of primary canines, first molars and second molars obtained average results 23.90 mm in the maxilla and 24.89 mm in the mandible. while measurements of the amount of mesiodistal width of permanent canines, first premolars and second premolars obtained average results 23.08 mm in the maxilla and 21.70 mm in the mandible. Conclusion. The mean values of Leeway space in Orthodontic patients at RSGMP FKG Unair is 0.83 mm in the maxilla and 3.19 mm in the mandible.
