Abstract

Background. Malocclusion has been defined as a deviation from normal occlusion. Prevalence studies on malocclusion have also been closely associated with the assessment of orthodonthic treatment need in selected communities. Information from such studies provided the basic information for the planning and progress of orthodontic delivery service to the public as well as the training of orthodonthic specialists to meet the orthodontics need and demand. Purpose. To determine the prevalence of malocclusion among the native Malay race and the racial mix of Malays in Malaysia. Method. A sample of Malaysian from both native Malay race and racial mix Malays recruits selectively with no previous history of orthodontic treatment participated in this research on study models. 150 samples were chosen each group of 75 samples selected by total sampling and few criterias needed for the studies, were taken from the dental status and basic information provided. Each question then was analyzed by percentage on every answer. Results. The racial mix of Malays have had the higher percentage of malocclusion comparing to the native Malay race. Genetic factor is the main reason on why the percentage is higher on racial mix. Conclusion. The overall prevalence of malocclusion stated that racial mix Malays has the higher percentage of malocclusion compared to native Malay race in ysia.
