Abstract
Background:Plaque is known as the main cause of caries, which usually accumulates on crown surfaces. To avoid this, we need plaque control as the first step to maintain dental hygiene. Previously, Piper betle was used as traditional drug for its antibacterial properties. Instead of Piper betle, sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda was added in dentrifice. Baking soda has an abilities to increase pH level, abrasive and antibacterial properties. Since Piper Betle and Baking Soda has an abilities to suppress plaque growth we need to know the effectivity of both toothpaste to control plaque. Purpose: This study was aimed to know the effectivity of toothpaste containing Piper betle and Baking soda to plaque formation on fixed bridge. Methods: This clinical experiment study was carried out in sixteen patients wearing fixed bridge at Prosthodontics Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Airlangga University in Surabaya from 2008-2010. In the first meeting, samples were instructed to brush their teeth using Piper Betle toothpaste. They were told not to eat for 4 hours. After 4 hours since the samples brush their teeth, disclosing agent was given on the fixed bridge to see the plaque growth. The second application were carried out one week after the first meeting. The samples were instructed to brush their teeth using Baking Soda toothpaste. The procedure was the same as the first application. Plaque index was analyzed by Paired t-test. Result: This study showed that there was a significant difference of plaque scores in patients who brushes their teeth using Piper betle and Baking soda containing toothpaste. Conclusion. Baking soda-contained toothpaste showed smaller plaque scores than Piper betle-contained toothpaste.
