Abstract
The establishment of caries preceded by the formation of dental plaque. Therefore, the formation of dental plaque should be prevented. Gardenia leaves have antibacterial compounds, namely essential oils, tannins, and flavonoids which have bactericide potency againts the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus salivarius which is the bacteria that causes dental caries. Objective: To determine the concentration of gardenia leaf infusion that have bactericide potency againts the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus salivarius. Methods: This study is an experimental research laboratory. Gardenia leaf infusion concentrations used were 50% and performed serial depletion. Then each concentration is contacted with the bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus salivarius. Results: Streptococcus mutans bacteria colonies begin to grow at a concentration of 6.25% while the bacteria Streptococcus salivarius colonies at a concentration of 12.5%. Conclusion: Gardenia leaf infusion minimum concentration that possess bactericide potency for Streptococccus mutans is 8%, while 17.5% of Streptococcus salivarius.
